Yeah Capitalism!
August 2, 2008
Bill Gates has an excellent piece on what he calls “creative capitalism.” Essentially, he believes that capitalism is the means, with just a little push from governments and philanthropists, to eradicate poverty and disease. He acknowledges that poor countries are poor often because they essentially have no rule of law, but that this shouldn’t stop us from doing what we can to improve their conditions – mainly through market forces.
Ultimately, Gates wants to encourage businesses to find markets in poor parts of the world and thereby increase their bottom lines – a slight adaptation of Milton Friedman’s observation that the “social responsibility of business is to increase its profits.”
Unserious.

Krauthammer – brilliant as usual – skewers the Dems’ incoherence on energy:
There are a dizzying number of economic and national security arguments for drilling at home: a $700 billion oil balance-of-payment deficit, a gas tax (equivalent) levied on the paychecks of American workers and poured into the treasuries of enemy and terror-supporting regimes, growing dependence on unstable states of the Persian Gulf and Caspian basin. Pelosi and the Democrats stand athwart shouting: We don’t care. We come to save the planet!

Obama and the Comedian
August 2, 2008
This is from a New York Times article:
“Obama and Reagan are quite similar in this regard,” said Jim Jordan, a Democratic strategist who managed John Kerry’s unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2004. “They deflect humor with a quip.”
So Mr. Obama spoke to a crowd of supporters in Orlando, Fla., on Friday, and poked fun at Mr. McCain. “We were expecting a more elevated debate,” he said. “They are running commercials about Hilton and Britney — I mean, that’s frivolous.”
“that’s frivolous” - hilarious! How does he do it?
Much more funny than this.
