The more things change…

March 28, 2009

I’m reading U.S. Grant’s Memoirs. He makes a comment that could be applied to today’s press corps. After the Civil War ended, Grant traveled “considerably through the North,” where he ran into untold numbers of people who wanted to hear about the war. “Correspondent of the press,” however, “were ever on hand to hear every word dropped, and were not always disposed to report correctly what did not confirm the preconceived notions, either about the conduct of the war or the individuals concerned in it.”

As Glenn Reynolds often writes, our current press refuses to report on events that don’t fit “the narrative.” Not surprisingly, this is nothing new.
